Most of us don’t really think seriously about our health until we are having problems with it. Only then do we recall that we probably should have exercised more or gone in for a preventative check up. Alas, the same goes with our dental situation.

Your dental health is vital to your overall health and enjoyment of life. If you’ve every busted a tooth or had a toothache, you know I am not lying. They can be crippling. Here is some advice on keeping those chompers in good shape.

Use A Straw - If you do drink soda or coffee, use a straw to prevent discoloration of the upper front teeth or brush after consuming these beverages.

Chewing Gum Helps - Chew sugarless gum, with or without xylitol, after meals or snacks when unable to brush.

Your Incisors - The Incisors are the teeth in the very front. They’re the sharpest teeth, built to cut food and shaped to shovel the food inward.

Baby Gum Pain - Sooth teething pain by gently rubbing baby’s gums with a clean finger, a small cool spoon, or wet gauze.

After a Filling - Many people experience some sensitivity after they receive a filling. The tooth may be sensitive to pressure, air, sweet foods or temperature. Composite fillings often cause sensitivity, but other types of filling material can, too.

Temporary Fillings - Temporary fillings may have a sedative effect on the tooth. The tooth may feel better after a temporary filling is placed. This is because the filling seals the tooth, protecting the pulp from bacteria and reducing sensitivity.

Leaking Fillings - A filling is said to be leaking when the side of the filling doesn’t fit tightly against the tooth. This can allow debris and saliva to seep down between the filling and the tooth.

Should I use a rinse - Most rinses are, at the very least, effective oral antiseptics that freshen the mouth and curb bad breath for up to three hours. Their success in preventing tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontal disease is limited, however.

Why Replace a Filling? - Fillings don’t last forever. A filling that is cracked or leaking can allow food debris and bacteria to seep down under the filling.

Toothache and Aspirin - If you get a toothache, you can use aspirin to dull the pain. Take the aspirin as normal, do not rub it on your gums

Going to the dentist is hardly high on anyone’s list of things to do. That being said, failure to give your teeth tune ups can lead to massive problems later on. If you don’t want to spend thousands on your mouth, take action now.
