Online Auto Insurance May Not Be Best For You

Some people do not care for the idea of using online auto insurance companies but you need to ask yourself why that is the case. In reality, the only time you ever need or want to talk to your car insurance agent is when you have an accident or need to make a claim, and outside of that, where the agent lives is almost immaterial. He could live next door or on Mars, as long as you can reach him when you need to.

Another reason some people don’t like online auto insurance is because they are afraid of being taken in a scam. It is true that you need to be careful when shopping online and for something as valuable as car insurance, but also note that there are federal regulations about insurance, and you also need to be careful when shopping at the mall. Do your due diligence but using an online auto insurance company should not present a concern if their rates are competitive and aggressive.

Like anything else, you should do some research on the online car insurance company you are considering using. Do they have a good reputation? How much are their net assets worth? And the most important part, if you need to make a claim, what is the procedure and is there someone locally who can file the claim and get it processed?

These are all excellent questions that you should think about, but they are every bit as valid even if you are purchasing auto insurance from the company down the street from where you live. Do you really know them? Can you answer these questions with 100% confidence about the local insurance company compared to the online insurance company?

As strange as it may seem, many people do not realize that they are not making a valid comparison when they are looking at two difference car insurance quotes. If the policies are not identical in what they cover, especially considering ceiling maximum amounts and deductibles, then it makes no sense to even compare them because they are not the same thing.

For example, if one quote has a maximum of $50,000 for hospitalization and the other one is quoting $5 million, do you see where one is going to cost you less? If one has a deductible of $300 for theft and another has a theft deductible of $2500, are you seeing where comparing these two policies is a waste of time because you are not comparing apples to apples?

Do not assume that an online auto insurance company is going to have the best rates. They will likely have very aggressive rates, but if you are a long-term customer of your existing carrier, chances are that they will also offer aggressive pricing in order to retain you as their customer.

The bottom line advice is to shop around and make sure you are comparing apples to apples in all areas of the car insurance quote. Online auto insurance quotes can be very aggressive but there is no guarantee that they will always represent your best value until you take the time to get one and compare it.
