Food can be one of the most expensive parts of planning your wedding. In fact, you’re lucky if you can get your reception catered for under $50 per guest. But if you’re on a budget, you have a choice.

Do you invite fewer people, or not feed them? Actually, what about getting some wedding recipes and making your own reception food?

The benefits of making your own wedding food are many. First, you can control the cost. Second, you can control the ingredients. By choosing your own food and ingredients, you can guarantee that everything at the reception fits any dietary guidelines you choose.

But you’ll need plenty of time to plan ahead, because your wedding day is going to be busy. Be sure to test all the recipes first. You also want to choose recipes that can stay fresh in the fridge for a few days, or freeze well.

Enlist the help of your family and friends. As long as you give them plenty of notice, a lot of them should probably be happy enough to help you make some wedding recipes for a few days.

Choosing the recipes to serve your guests could be the toughest part of the plan. There are thousands of possibilities. Peruse cookbooks at the book store, and perhaps buy a couple that each have several good ideas.

The best resources, of course, could be the internet. There are literally thousands of recipes on dozens of recipe sites. You could put together a fine menu with just a few hours of research.

There are lots of things you might consider serving at your reception. Consider skewered meats served with fine sauces, tea sandwiches (carrot, pimento, cucumber & cream cheese, etc.), potato skins with unusual toppings, wedges of pita bread with dips, crackers with smoked salmon, etc.

Be sure to look for the right wedding recipes that are delicious, but not the ordinary party fare for a Saturday night get-together. You want to serve food that will stand out in the memories of both you and your guests.
