Getting a great domain name is becoming more and more difficult. With roughly 25 million dot com names already registered and thousands more sold each day, the pickings can be rather slim.

A good domain name can be the oxygen an online business needs to thrive. Simple, easy to remember dot com names are typically the most highly sought after. So are those names that directly relate to products, services and broad topics. These names are becoming incredibly rare and when they are available they can cost a lot more than some might think.

Since these names are linked to site success, a lot of people seek them out by others means. Buying them from others who have already purchased and registered them can get very costly. Some dot com names are fetching prices in the millions, so it can seem like finding a good one would be impossible.

The buying and selling of domain names has become a big business. There is no denying that. Private investors and even corporations are making very big returns by buying, registers and selling names to others who can use them. There are even sites that have been created to facilitate the trading of these names. Even eBay has gotten into the game in facilitating transfers of names through its auction site.

The competition for names might be high, but there is still a route people can take to get their hands on some very good domain names. Keeping an eye on the expired or soon-to-expire domain name market can be the answer. There are thousands and thousands of names out there that have been canceled, have expired or are getting ready to lapse.

Domains that fall into the expired class are those that were once registered and perhaps even utilized. For whatever reason, the owners of these names decided not to renew. The reason range from lack of payment to going out of business. No matter the reason, however, these names end up back on the market and they can be worth a pretty penny. Many of these sites have established traffic, links and reputations. Building a new site with the old name can be a boon for new web publishers. It’s even feasible to just buy these names to turn around and sell them again.

Although it used to be difficult to track domains that were about to expire or those that just had, that’s no longer the case. There are tools out there that can help buyers find expired domains and track those that are soon to become available.

Devising a catchy domain name can be very important to business. It doesn’t matter whether you need a domain name for yourself or you just want to get into buying or selling, the expired route can be the way to go. It opens doors where they might have been closed before.
