Injurying ones back is a pretty common occurence, and if you are one of the millions of people around the world who has, you can expect to have back pain for possibly a long time. Proprietary medication is often the first route to back pain relief; Whilst prescription pain relief pills may in fact dull the pain to a manageable degree, they do not treat the root cause of the problem. They merely blot out the pain, making it feel like the injury is gone, but it isn’t.

Medication should be used sparingly and under the strict supervision of a medical professional. Often prescription pain medication can be more of a problem than the back injury itself. This is due to the acdictive nature of the medication and their tendency for them to become habit forming, if taken over a long period of time.

The back is under a constant strain throughout our lives and whilst it is very strong, spinal injury is one of the most common conditions around the world and even sitting incorrectly or having bad posture can create a long term problem

However, back pain is usually caused by a lifting accident or from lifting incorrectly and it is normally the lower back that suffers. More recently people are willing to try natural back pain relief treatments to stop their reliance on other types of medication. An easy, inexpensive method to treat pain and bring relief is stretching; it actually relaxes the back muscles which can become knotted and tight, causing discomfort.

Another type of treatment uses reflexology to massage the feet. It is a very old natural therapy which helps to relieve many chronic ailments. Reflexology can also help to improve the body’s blood circulation and relax muscles.

Acupuncture is used frequently by people suffering spinal agony by giving them back pain relief just as it has for thousands of years, although, only recently in the West. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the theory that all people have this energy which flows through them called ‘chi’ or ‘qi’. Chi can become blocked but can be released by using thin needles inserted into various points on the body. Like reflexology, acupuncture seems to be used by people who suffer with chronic conditions like back pain which requires relief.

The Chinese discipline of tai chi has also provided relief as it uses yoga like principles. It is far easier and much slower so there is less likelihood of further damage being caused. The most important aspect of tai chi is that almost anyone can participate as it uses gentle breathing exercises and techniques to help relax the body.

In addition to these methods to natural back pain relief, exercise can also help to relieve back pain. By exercising regularly there is less chance of a back pain attack.
